Africa is a vast and beautiful continent with incredible wildlife, iconic landscapes, and ancient wonders abound. But when it comes to romantic destinations, Africa has a seemingly inexhaustible selection of bush and beach destinations that are romantic, exciting and off-the-beaten-track. We present the ROAR AFRICA Honeymoon Hotlist, a selection of 10 luxurious destinations that allow you to disconnect from the world and connect with each other.
1. NORTH ISLAND, Seychelles
Play out your inner Robinson Crusoe fantasies on the five-star, exclusive eco-sanctuary of North Island, a nature conservancy in the inner granitic islands of the Seychelles. The island’s jaw-dropping natural beauty and geographic isolation make for the kind of barefoot luxury that strikes a primal chord in all who visit. No wonder it’s garnered a string of awards since it first opened more than 10 years ago. With just 11 secluded villas that come complete with marble baths, writing nooks, private plunge pools, a covered gazebo and your own private beach access – this is as romantic as it gets. But don’t take our word for it, come and see for yourself.
2. ANGAMA MARA, Great Rift Valley, Kenya
Suspended on the rim of the Great Rift Valley Escarpment, Angama Mara is a place where heaven and earth collide. Whether you’re drifting across the Mara in a hot air balloon with your beloved, enjoying an idyllic picnic in the exact place where parts of the iconic safari romance “Out of Africa” were filmed, or succumbing to a new garden-to-table private dining experience in the Shamba – you will not be disappointed. Each of the 15 tented suites has endless vistas across the Mara, so there’s really no need to leave your room. Just order in and watch the spectacle of nature from the (exceptional) comfort of your deck.
3. NAY PALAD, SEGERA RETREAT, Laikipia Plateau, Kenya
Situated in the heart of Laikipia Plateau, Nay Palad is a new, one-of-a-kind bush retreat resembling a giant bird’s nest for two at Kenya’s Segera Retreat. This unique, fantastical and romantic experience will have you arriving at sunset – champagne in hand – to an elevated 20-foot by 20-foot nest twinkling with lanterns. Choose between sleeping outdoors in a luxurious bed beneath a star-studded African sky or cocooned indoors with the sounds of the bush as your auto-repeat soundtrack.
4. Mnemba Island, Tanzania
With just ten beachside bandas that overlook the Mnemba atoll on the north-eastern tip of Zanzibar, the private island of Mnemba combines the virtues of barefoot luxury and tropical paradise to spectacular effect. The utterly private open-air bandas made from palm leaves and wood line a dedicated stretch of private beach. Surrounded by an island some 4kms wide by 7kms long, it’s a breeding haven for the endangered green turtle, with the pristine waters offering incredible snorkeling and scuba diving excursions too.
5. SINGITA FARU FARU, Grumeti Reserve, Tanzania
Situated in Tanzania’s Singita Grumeti concession, Singita Faru Faru offers a contemporary and ultra-luxurious lesson in the eloquence of understatement. Think low-slung, glass boxes overlooking the Grumeti River where the impeccably curated interiors channel a 1940s Botanist safari camp. If you’re there to see the migration or simply commune with your loved one in nature, you are guaranteed a ringside seat complete with an ice-cold G&T, memorable campfire moments, delicious food, impeccable service and an overwhelming luxury of space.
6. AZURA BENGUERRA, Mozambique
A luxury beach resort off the coastline of Mozambique, Azura Benguerra is set within a protected marine conservation area with white sandy beaches and pristine coral reefs. Sightings of a variety of tropical fish species as well as the continent’s only population of the rare dugong are common here, which is why Azura is known as a premier diving site with a dedicated Padi 5-star Dive Centre to prove it. Azura’s luxurious villas all come with a private pool, a beachside sala and a dedicated butler service and they up the ante on romantic dining experiences – offering everything from a private sunset meal at your villa to a remote island picnic, or a candle-lit beach dinner.
7. SINGITA SABORA, Grumeti Reserve, Tanzania
We can think of no better vantage point from which to experience the great migration than Singita Sabora Tented Camp, a permanent under-canvas camp that evokes the opulence and romance of an old-world safari-style hunting camp. Ample-sized spaces offer a home-from-home experience that defies the concept of traditional camping at every turn. While Sabora’s location on the Grumeti plains offers incredible access to the great migration, we’d suggesting chartering a hot air balloon trip for an unforgettably romantic ride over the treetops of the Serengeti.
8. La Residence, Franschhoek, South Africa
This magnificent, private, 30-acre estate nestled among olives groves, vineyards and fruit trees, offers exceptional views and unadulterated luxury. For those looking for ultimate luxury experience, look no further than La Residence.
Located just a five-minute drive from the center of Franschhoek, this hotel offers a heady mixture of tranquility and five-star service. Guests enjoy a choice of eleven elaborately decorated suites and five villas, each accommodating up to 20 guests. Relax at the infinity pool overlooking an olive grove and lavender fields, unwind in your personal spa, indulge in a beauty treatment or watch the sunset from your own private verandah.

A Haute Voyage: Finding the change withinThe Greatest Safari on Earth isn’t just about redefining ‘beyond first class’ travel, it’s about learning more about our world and how we show up in it. A kind of “haute voyage.” It’s about what truly matters. That undefinable feeling of intimacy and connection so central to our well-being and to the richness of our human experience. Isn’t that what we’re all searching for on this journey called life?
