If African women rise, wildlife will thrive
When I founded ROAR AFRICA in 2005, I knew that travel could be a force for change. But it was standing on the apron at Cape Town Airport, searching for the pilot of my flight, that crystallized exactly how… The captain was a woman. The co-pilot was a woman. A spark ignited. What if an entire safari was led by women? Women guides, women trackers, women chefs, women sommeliers… women leading from the front.
That moment gave birth to our Women’s Empowerment Retreats, the first of their kind in the industry and a concept never seen before. Since then, we have hosted four retreats in South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, my homeland of Zimbabwe, and Botswana. The ripple effect of these retreats has been beyond anything I could ever have imagined. We have created educational opportunities, scholarships, documentary films, exchange programs and funding for critical conservation and women’s health initiatives. TED Talks have been given, books written and new career paths forged. We have, quite literally, changed lives.
Our sixth retreat will take place in Tanzania’s exclusive Grumeti Reserve at Singita Sasakwa Lodge. Set high above the plains, Sasakwa is a place of quiet strength and purpose and a testament to Singita’s deep commitment to conservation. Here, the feeling isn’t one of opulence, but instead about being completely at home in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Over five unforgettable days we’ll explore the Grumeti Reserve, a private sanctuary that teems with wildlife. Game drives, guided bush walks and moments of reflection in this extraordinary setting will connect us to the land, to each other and to our female speakers, setting the stage for a seismic shift in ourselves and the lives of others.
