It was George Bernard Shaw who once said: “There is no sincerer love than the love of food.” We couldn’t agree more, although at ROAR AFRICA it’s a passion trumped only by our love of Africa and the extraordinarily diverse yet consistently excellent cuisine of the Cape.
This October we will launch our inaugural Flavors of a Rainbow Nation journey. South Africa is known as the Rainbow Nation. An exciting culinary and cultural adventure that will ensure a taste sensation on every level as well a total immersion in the flavors, culture, and personality of South Africa. Hosted by New York Chef – Dan Kluger (the driving force behind Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s restaurants ABC Kitchen and ABC Cocina), of Loring Place restaurant & Deborah Calmeyer (CEO & Founder of ROAR AFRICA). Join Dan & Deborah as they discover the best that the Cape has to offer, ending with a cookout under a bowl of stars on safari.
Cape Town’s long history with food began more than 350 years ago when it supplied passing ships from the Dutch East India Company with fresh meat, fruit, and vegetables. Today this tradition continues in the mother city, as she is affectionately known, with a network of organic and artisanal suppliers scattered over the city that offer a wide range of locally produced (ingredients) meat, fish, cheese, fresh produce, beer, and wine. Flavors of a Rainbow Nation is therefore, a carefully curated gastronomic adventure, where we will reveal our insider’s guide to the city’s best food markets, artisanal stores, delicatessens, restaurants, cafes, cocktail bars and breweries, allowing you to soak up the unique cultural experiences, influences, and inspirations that make this city the foodie capital of Africa.
This sensory journey will take you from the city center, where you will gain insider knowledge, to Cape Point (the most south-western point of the African continent) and to the very top of Table Mountain, where you will experience a wonderful array of flavors with sublime views at every turn. After two days you will depart for the Cape Winelands where you will visit one of the country’s most historic vineyards and stay at an award-winning contemporary farm stay hotel, as well as visit our pick of Wineland estates and a very special cookery school.
And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, we’ll whisk you off to the wilderness of the Kruger National Park and Singita’s recently refurbished and super-intimate Sweni Lodge where you will taste not only Singita’s incredible cuisine but also experience the five-star hospitality that has made them an award-winning safari specialist
The finale event will culminate in a combined cook-out where Dan and local Singita Shangaan chefs will curate, and create your meal under African skies. If this sounds like your idea of culinary nirvana, book now by emailing deb@roarafrica.com to secure your place.
