A life-changing summer safari

When guests ask me why they should visit Africa, my home continent, my answer is always that there is no better use of leisure time than time spent in the wild. Africa’s vast, wide-open spaces and untamed landscapes where iconic wildlife roams free is nature in its purest form. The wilderness of Africa calls to something deep within us. The stillness, seclusion and silence in the profoundly beautiful spaces allows us to drop back into our bodies and yield to the awe and wonder we are yearning for.

Our northern hemisphere summer—from roughly June to October—is one of my favourite times to go on safari. It is, in fact, “winter” in sub-Saharan Africa, but winter here is endless blue skies, balmy sunshine and delightful evenings around the open fire, a bush baby (hot water bottle) on your lap. The mild temperatures allow for languid days of exploration: on game drives searching for leopards and lions in the sun-dappled shade; gliding across ethereal landscapes in a hot air balloon; or floating along the rivers and waterways in a mokoro (dugout canoe) as birds fill the sky and fish eagles cry. Both the landscapes and the wildlife are at their peak at this time of year, often referred to as the ‘dry season’ and the safari experience is simply sublime. Thus, it is my pleasure to share with you my recommendations for the most exceptional destinations for a summer safari.

Botswana’s Okavango Delta is a true feat of nature’s intelligence. This vast inland delta comes into its own from May to October with the miracle of the annual flood that turns the area into a lush paradise: emerald-green, pristine and thriving with wildlife. Alongside game drives and helicopter flights, floating along the crystal-clear waters on a mokoro canoe is a wonderful way to explore and watch the staggering numbers of lechwe antelope, elephant, buffalo and big cats. The Delta is also home to one of my favourite camps on the continent, Xigera, a deeply considered, soulful and beautiful set up with sunrises and wildlife that leave one gasping in jaw dropping delight.

Between July and October, Kenya’s Masai Mara buzzes with the momentum of the Great Migration as thousands of wildebeest and zebras brave the perilous crossing of the predator-laced Mara River. The surrounding golden grass plains offer an abundance of wildlife too. A short flight north to Laikipia offers a dramatic change in landscape and an introduction to some of the continent’s most pioneering conservation projects. At Segera, owned by Jochen Zeitz, ambitious plans are underway to create the largest rhino sanctuary in the world through the joining of ancestral lands. Segera also offers exclusive-use villas with the space and freedom for families and groups to spend time together in a raw and undisturbed environment.

A country of hope, reconciliation and restoration, Rwanda offers an incredibly rarified experience. It’s a place to root back to yourself, especially when trekking with the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas. Coming face to face with one of these magnificent primates, who share 98% of our DNA, in their misty forest sanctuaries is utterly humbling and an encounter that will linger in your heart long after you leave. After your trek, inimitable lodges like One&Only Gorillas Nest and Singita Kwitonda are havens of tranquillity in which to reflect on the magnitude of the experience.

I will end with South Africa, my second home, where the allure of world-class cities, outstanding food and wine and spectacular wilderness areas is thrillingly diverse. The Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve is one of the most iconic destinations to see the Big Five—lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos—and is home to top-tier lodges like Singita, Cheetah Plains and Sabi Sabi. Adding on time in cosmopolitan Cape Town is the ideal contrast, not only for a unique beach and mountain experience, but to spot the incredible array of marine life, including dolphins, sharks, Cape fur seals and magnificent colony of African penguins at Boulders Beach.
