The Zeitz Foundation delivers on its vision and mission through two programs: the global Long Run Initiative and the 4Cs, and the Segera Rhino Sanctuary program in Kenya.
The Long Run and the 4Cs
At the time of its inception, the ZEITZ foundation launched ‘The 4Cs’: Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce. These tenets became the foundation of all of the Foundation’s initiatives, creating sustainable win-win scenarios for both nature and communities. Originally a ZEITZ Foundation program, The Long Run is a membership organization of nature-based tourism businesses that are committed to driving sustainability through the holistic 4Cs philosophy. Now safeguarding over 23 million acres of nature in 22 different countries, touching the lives of 750,000 people and protecting over 30,000 plant and animal species, The Long Run has become the largest organization of its kind worldwide.
Conservation: Thriving ecosystems and biodiversity are integral to the survival of people and our planet. Safeguarding this biodiversity to support global needs is vital.
Community: People matter and it is the right of every person to have their basic needs met. Enhancing the well-being of communities is a fundamental obligation of all.
Culture: Celebrating cultural diversity and commonality nurtures understanding and fosters connections. Respecting cultural difference is crucial for our future.
Commerce: Trading has been central to the development of civilizations over thousands of years and is likely to remain so. Thus, sustainability must be central to business.
The Segera Rhino Sanctuary
In central Kenya, in a beautiful area known as Laikipia, black rhino populations have declined by a staggering 96% over the last 20 years. The species is now categorised as critically endangered. The Zeitz Foundation, through the Segera Rhino Sanctuary, plan to remove boundaries and connect large tracts of landscape to create one large, interconnected rhino habitat. This will include private and community conservancies, government parks and formerly abandoned lands to become one of the largest rhino sanctuaries in the world. Segera Conservancy will be the founding conservancy of the staggering initiative.
